This is Dorothy. She was one of 69 women who went missing and murdered from Vancouver’s downtown Eastside. At the time these women were going missing ( in the late 90’s in one year alone, 14 women vanished from this six block radius), authorities ignored this, so I made a decision to speak into the idea of these women being viewed as inconsequential, that they didn’t have a voice.
So although these paintings can be disturbing, I only painted the truth. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
I did not sanitize the subject matter because although all of these women are beautiful in my eyes (and many tears of anguish were shed with every brushstroke over five years), it would do no justice to this horrific epidemic that still exists throughout the world. I did not memorialize these women, instead to me they symbolize true heroes who WILL create change by shedding light on this tragedy. I want this #artcollection
to someday be seen and used within the educational system. I’ve witnessed first-hand the impact of this collection from high school to university levels. I KNOW THE POWER THIS COLLECTION HOLDS.
I wanted to confront society with issues such a NOT having a voice, AND Dorothy’s mouth is stapled shut.
Until we as a society, acknowledge our role in women going missing from marginalized community’s, until we shed light on our darkness, change will not occur.
I urge you to share this post with your brothers and sisters, mothers and friends..
