Tangerine. Spring dè Tropics.
Faith runs deep here. Deeper than the roots and remainings of the great Banyan tree crouching thick like some mild giant in its sleep, trunks spread and sprout from its gut weaving a flexuous, deep-jutted fence. Fear and fancy perhaps are the two most primary feelings man has always carried forward in his heart since he has first found an authorized reason to step inside a house of a god, or any god for that matter.
Day unfolds at a centuries old Shiva temple in one of the remotest corners of Bengal. The original structure with thatched roof remains. A flight of stairs go down about ten feet to the inner sanctum. Dark and damp it is in here. Shiva is worshipped in His 'Linga' form - a symbol - a phallus, an attempt to give form to The Formless. The significance and the paradox, among many others, perhaps characterize us as a people. Sexuality is indeed problematic in this land.
Men and women stream in praying for wealth and wellbeing, kids fuss and fret, cows stalled on the road create a ruckus, horns blare, merry party of hymn singers dance and chorus to the tune of flute and karatalas - the frenzy is a sight. Shops selling sweets bangles and plastic toys - the dollface PVC charm makes you repulse your own form for a moment - this body of flesh and skin rots away every minute anyway.
Bright blue tarpaulin sheets folded across tiny slots bordering the temple premise, hawkers peddle here brass plates, conch shells, copper rings, beads and magic threads - believed to cure all the misery and sufferings man may ever has possibly endured since his days of being and becoming in this Life. Fix for virility to immortality is sold here cheap. The thrills are immense.
Shopwoman sells me a ring. "It'll bring back your man. You have sad eyes. Do not haggle, child. Take it for sixty." Tangerine beads from a temple shop. Part of my *Colors of Spring* series this season. #tangerine
